Prevalence is one of the basic epidemiological parameters of morbidity, which expresses the occurrence of a certain disease in the monitored population at a certain point in time. It is calculated as the ratio of the number of all (known) persons with the disease at a particular point in time and the population at risk of the disease, expressed in 100,000 persons of the exposed population. It is a good proxy for measuring the likelihood of infection for an individual, as it indirectly expresses the probability of coming into contact with an infected person.
Incidence refers to an increase, or to a number of new infected (PCR laboratory confirmed) incidents. Ordinary it is counted as an average daily number of new infected incidents per 100,000 inhabitants by the length of 14-days period.
The median divides a sequence of numbers ordered by size into two equally numerous halves. At least 50% of the values are less than or equal to and at least 50% of the values are greater than or equal to the median. In Slovakia, the moving median is calculated from the number of daily new infections in the past week (7 days).
COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. It was first identified in patients with severe respiratory difficulties in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. COVID-19 affects mainly the respiratory system, in more severe cases causes pneumonia and can lead to death. The virus is transmitted by droplets during coughing, sneezing or talking and endangers persons who are in close or prolonged contact with an infected person. The infection can also be transmitted through contaminated objects.
